To turn text into a useful mind map, first reduce the text to the claims, examples, decisions, and questions that must survive. How should you prepare long text before mapping it?

The first map might still place a constraint under the wrong option or treat an interview observation as proof of a cause. That is expected. The value of the first draft is that those relationships become visible enough to challenge.

How do you check whether the hierarchy is accurate?

Review structure before style. Begin at the center and ask whether each top-level branch answers a different part of the central question. Merge paraphrased branches and split any branch that combines evidence, decision, and action without distinction.

Then inspect every level with six questions:

  1. Does this child node actually support, explain, constrain, or belong to its parent?
  2. Is this statement a fact, interpretation, assumption, option, decision, or action?
  3. What source or owner is needed before someone can rely on it?
  4. Did the shorter wording remove a qualification or change the strength of a claim?

Is a mind map the same as a summary?

No. A summary reduces a source while preserving a mostly linear explanation. A mind map makes selected relationships explicit through parents, children, and sibling branches. The same reviewed text can support both, but they answer different questions.

Use a summary when sequence, tone, or a continuous argument matters. Use a mind map when you need to scan dimensions, trace dependencies, compare branches, or see what is missing. Keep both when the map acts as navigation and the summary preserves nuance that short labels cannot hold.

An AI-generated map can create a relationship that the source never stated. That is why the map must be checked against the text. Visual organization can make an unsupported connection feel more certain, even though the evidence has not changed.

How should privacy affect the text you provide?

Remove personal, confidential, regulated, or contract-restricted information unless you have a valid reason and permission to process it. Replace names with roles when identity is irrelevant. Do not paste secrets, credentials, private customer records, or source material you are not allowed to use.

Before sharing, inspect the complete map rather than only the branch currently in view. Public read-only links are intended for open viewing.
